Caring for the world's finest and one of the most unique leathers
Genuine Shell Cordovan requires a little maintenance in order to maximize its longevity, durability and luster. It should be treated in the same manner as you would a pair of fine leather shoes.
It is important to understand the physical differences between Genuine Shell Cordovan and other leathers, such as a typical calfskin. True Shell Cordovan leather is inherently saturated with natural collagen. This aids in its water-resistance and supple nature. However, it is always expelling this natural collagen through the top surface layer. If you've not worn your strap in a while, you may notice a white film that forms over the top surface. This is the collagen I'm referring to. Since these nutrients are always being expelled, it is important to replace them on a somewhat regular basis.
Failing to condition Genuine Shell Cordovan leather will result in it drying out, cracking and/or splitting - something that never happens when properly cared for due to it's physical construction and density. Being diligent about replenishing and feeding this unique leather with fresh nutrients will reward you with outstanding service for many years to come. Conversely, failing to do so may lead to disappointment.
Routine conditioning (once every month or so) will only enhance the inherent water-resistant characteristics of Shell Cordovan. I would suggest using something that’s neutral in color, unless you would like to slightly darken a color that’s already somewhat light, or correct wear and/or abrasions.
If a black or oxblood strap ever becomes scratched, you can then use a high quality color-matched shoe polish. When doing so, just take care to stay away from the stitching if it is a very light or contrasting color.
The finest color-matched product that I know of is made by Allen-Edmonds. In fact, Allen- Edmonds has formulated a cream that’s been made specifically for Genuine Shell Cordovan, and it does an outstanding job of feeding and restoring the original luster. They offer these on their Website, and are available in both black and burgundy. The burgundy color will match the Oxblood straps that are crafted by Europelli.
If you prefer to use a clear or neutral product, so a light stitch won't become discolored, be sure to use a paste wax as opposed to a liquid cream. The exception to this rule would be the neutral cream made by Venetian. Other manufacturers include Alden, Meltonian, Kelly's, and Kiwi.
The suggestions above are for routine nourishing and for correcting surface abrasions that might occur if scratched. If the surface of your strap is in good cosmetic condition and you simply want to rejuvenate a natural shine, the best course of action is by simply buffing it with a soft cotton cloth or horse hair brush after using a neutral wax. This offers the best results for a strap that has been well-cared for.
I have been asked many times whether Genuine Shell Cordovan leather is waterproof. It is very water-resistant, but it does not come from the tannery waterproof treated. I typically use this scenario as a suggestion: Genuine Shell Cordovan shoes typically sell for anywhere between $475 - $700.00. I have a pair myself and I can assure you that after it rains, I always step over a puddle - not right in the middle of it. When it comes to repeated submersion, there are better choices than using the world's finest leather.
If you have other questions please don’t hesitate to ask. It would be my pleasure to help in any way that I can.
Enjoy and wear your Europelli Genuine Shell Cordovan strap in the very best of health and happiness!
